Our Approach to Spring Football For 6th-8th Graders

Whether a player intends to play flag, or tackle, football in the fall, we want to bring all athletes together in the spring with a focus on fundamentals developmental, teamwork, and competition while respecting that football is not the athlete's #1 priority in the spring like it will be in the fall.

Spring is non-padded, non-contact and suitable for all levels of football.  We strongly encourage anyone who plans to play tackle in the fall, is considering tackle, or plans to eventually play for GBN to attend this camp.

Our spring season runs from April 8th until May 19th (6 weeks).  Each week offers three opportunities to develop:

  • Position / Speed Days - Monday's from 500-700p
  • Practices - Thursday 530-700p
  • Sunday Night Lights - Sunday evenings from 600-800p

Position Days

Our focus will be on offensive position fundamentals at QB, RB, WR, and OL & speed and agility training.  While players can ultimately choose for themselves which position station to attend, the Jr Spartan program will make recommendations for each player based on position they are most likely to play in the fall.  Each station will be overseen by a credentialed position coach and the focus will be on individual development.

Practices

Our practice days will be run by Jr Spartan Tackle coaches and focus on learning the playbooks and executing as a team.  We will run both offense and defense, and some introduction to special teams.  Each practice will be 90 minutes in length,

SUNDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Every Sunday, we will come together to play in the GBN Stadium to apply learnings from the week in a competitive intra-squad setting.  Teams will be dynamically created based on available players and will be split up evenly across the position groups.

Games will 9-on-9 two-hand touch football from the 40 yard line with two games going at a time.  We will have referees for each game and score will be kept.

FAQ

Here is a list of frequently asked questions:

Why are we not offering 6th-8th grade boys the opportunity to play Flag Football in the Northern Illinois Flag Football League, or 7-on-7 in The Chicagoland Youth Football League?

In past years, we have offered spring flag football up until the 6th grade and 7-on-7 for 6th-8th grade.  We have found that, because of other spring sport commitments, our athletes are looking for more predictable schedules that fit better within their spring sport.

Additionally, we would like to put more focus in the spring on player development and playing together.

Is this only for tackle players?

No.  This is for any 6th-8th grader who wishes to further develop their skills while still being able to keep their focus on their primary spring sport.

Is this only for boys?

No.  This is open to any 6th-8th grader who wishes to further develop their skills.  We do offer girls flag football in the spring from 3rd-8th grade as acknowledgement of the rapid expansion of the sport and due to the limited number of girls who participate in tackle football.

I play another spring sport, should I participate?

We would advise anyone interested in this program who can reliably make at least one session per week to register.  Each day has a unique focus and is self-contained; while athletes who attend all three will likely develop the most, we have designed this assuming players will not be able to attend each session consistently.

Why is a registration fee charged for this?  What are the actual costs to run this program?

Although we heavily rely on our volunteer coaches and board members to run our program, we do have a number of costs that we incur:

  • Our position coaches are paid professionals
  • Referees
  • Spiritwear
  • Field Marshalls and security

Additionally, as with all registrations, a portion of the fees goes to the Jr Spartan program to contribute to the overhead of running the program, being able to offer scholarships to Northbrook youth in need, and give back to the community.

What eligibility restrictions are there?

This is aimed at 6th-8th graders in the D225 boundaries who will attend Glenbrook North HS.
